How to export from Mexico?

Learn about the basic requirements you need to export your merchandise to other countries

We refer to exportation, as the legal shipment of domestic or nationalized goods for consumption abroad. Exporting is selling, and like in any business, it symbolizes perseverance, dedication, and true commitment.

Is there a special permit for exportation?

No, you only need to be registered in the Federal Taxpayer Registry. Only a small group of products required the company to register in the Sectoral Exportations Registry, some of those products are: alcoholic beverages, beer, alcohol, denatured alcohol, decrystallize honey, and manufactured tobacco

Identify the tariff code of your product

What is the Non-Tariff classification of a product?

When exporting a product you need to know the code with which it is identified based on an internationally adopted system known as the Harmonized System for the Classification and Coding of Goods.

This code, consisting of 6 internationally homologous digits plus two additional digits assigned by each country, allows determining the tariff regulations and non-tariff restrictions that your product will be subject to in the importing market. It also facilitates commercial transactions by using the same code for a product in any country, regardless of language differences.

The Customs Law authorizes only the Customs Broker and the SHCP to determine the tariff classification, given the level of specialization, technical complexity, and the risks and responsibilities involved in incorrect classification.

Understand the tariff and non- tariff restrictions and regulations of your product

What are the tariff and non-tariff regulations and restrictions that my product must comply with to be exported?

Tariff regulations are taxes (tariffs) that must be paid at the customs of a country by importers or exporters for the entry or exit of merchandise. In Mexico, most products don't have tariffs on exportations.

Non-tariff regulations are measures established by governments to control the flow of goods between countries, either to protect the production plant and national economies, or to preserve the merchandise of each country in terms of the environment, health, animal or plant health, or to ensure consumers the good quality of the products they are acquiring, or, if needed, to inform them about the characteristics of the same goods susceptible to foreign trade.

Identify the documents you need for export

The basic documentation required in any export process is as follows:

  1. CFDI or equivalent document
  2. Entrustment letter and tax file
  3. Letter of Instructions to the customs broker (specific and detailed information about the operation delivered directly to the customs broker)
  4. Packing List
  5. Certificate of Origin
  6. Transport document
  7. Documents validating compliance with non-tariff regulations and restrictions, such as: health certificates, quality certificates, permits.
